Bernice Linden, 84, of Los Angeles, passed away peacefully on January 24th, leaving behind a lifetime of love, laughter, and music. Born in Queens, she was a vibrant New York transplant who made her beloved Los Angeles home.
A devoted mother and grandmother, she cherished her two daughters, Dominica and Anne, and her grandson, Max, who were the great joys of her life. She spoke of them often and proudly, celebrating their accomplishments and surrounding them with unwavering encouragement and love.
Her practicality was her quiet superpower; she was a lifelong optimist who believed that even life’s hardest moments were made better by jazz and cats.
Nothing brought her more joy than an evening surrounded by friends with the sound of live jazz filling the room. Whether swaying to the ivory keys of Billy Mitchell, the drums of Roy McCurdy, or discovering a new quartet at LACMA Jazz Nights, she was always in her element. For her, jazz concerts were never just entertainment—they were community, connection, expression, and celebration.
She had a gift for spontaneously expanding her circle of friends and never missed an opportunity to meet someone new. At any jazz venue, she always had a seat saved at her table for friends who joined her on these treasured evenings, making sure no one’s glass—or spirit—was ever empty.
Beyond her love of music, Bernice was known for her kindness, generosity, and fierce loyalty. She supported local artists, cherished her friendships, and embraced every opportunity to celebrate life. Her home was always open, her calendar always full, and her heart always welcoming. She generously supported many causes, including one close to her heart, Covenant House California. She believed deeply in justice, equality, and the power of individual responsibility within a caring community.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a local jazz organization or charity of your choice.
She leaves behind her beloved daughters, Dominica and Anne; her cherished grandson, Max; and dear friends and extended family who will forever hear her rhythm in their hearts.
