Brad Monks
Obituary

Brad Monks passed away on the morning of September 5th, at the age of 73, with his daughters by his side. He was diagnosed with stage 4 thymic carcinoma last September and was told that it was terminal. He fought for as long as his body would allow so he could be here for important family events. Now, he’ll have a front-row seat in Heaven to all those special moments still to come.

Brad was born in September 1952, in Roosevelt, Utah to Cal Monks and Gina Thomas. He married Terri Gates on June 16, 1979. Brad was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on December 19, 1981, and he and Terri were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on March 10, 1983.

Brad loved growing up on the family farm in Myton, where his family raised cattle and grew corn, alfalfa, and other crops. He attended Union High School, where he played basketball and served as Student Body President. After completing college, Brad returned to Union High School as a teacher and head basketball coach. He later served as a counselor and, eventually, an administrator.

In 1990, Brad became the assistant principal at Timpview High School in Provo, Utah, where he would spend the next 27 years. He affectionately became known as “MONKS” (and sometimes “Mr. Monks”) by the student body. Brad LOVED his job! He loved his coworkers and especially enjoyed working with the students, athletes, and coaches.  He loved having both his daughters attend Timpview and treasured the relationships he built with them and their friends. He took great pride in Timpview’s athletes and loved watching them succeed at state tournaments. After his many years at Timpview, Brad finished his career at Slate Canyon where he found his work to be incredibly rewarding.

Brad showed his love for others through service and no one felt that love more than his family.  He was always there-ready to help, work, fix, build, move or do whatever needed to be done.  Serving others wasn't something Brad simply did; it was a part of who he was.  When he wasn’t working or helping someone, he loved trips to Lake Powell with his family, water skiing, snow skiing, hunting, camping, and golfing. But once his grandkids came along, nothing brought him greater joy.  His children and grandchildren became the center of his world, and he rarely missed an opportunity to show up for them-especially at their games and athletic events.  He was their biggest supporter, and they always knew they could count on him.

Brad is survived by his daughters, Natalie (Daniel) Bobik and Kristi (Jeff) Tobin; his nine grandchildren, Jaxton, Blaykli, Tyson, Dodger, Aubree, Nixon, Ailee, Boston, and Jett;  and his siblings, Kathy (Scott) Pedersen, Michelle (Ralph) Ames, Jane Osborne, and Tom (Boni) Monks. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, October 5, 2026, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 303 W. 3700 N. in Provo, Utah.
