David Michael Bourassa was born on March 12, 1953, in Oxnard, California, and passed away on January 29, 2026, in Cathedral City, California.
David was passionate about life and deeply engaged with the world around him. He had a lifelong love of aviation and was an enthusiastic world traveler who enjoyed experiencing different cultures and meeting people wherever he went. At home, he loved cooking and entertaining, often bringing family and friends together around good food and conversation.
David spent 37 years working at Bimbo Bakeries in Commerce City, California. He also served his community in many meaningful ways, including as a board member of the Bimbo Bakery Credit Union and as a founding board member of the AIDS Assistance Thrift Store in Long Beach, California. He was an active volunteer and advocate for St. Francis AIDS Hospice and also volunteered with Meals on Wheels in Long Beach. In addition, David was an active member of the Prime Timers in Palm Springs.
David was known for his warm, social nature and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He was well respected by his community, family, and friends, and he genuinely enjoyed socializing with everyone he encountered. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his family and watching his nieces and nephews grow into successful adults.
Among his proudest accomplishments was his marriage to his husband, Rick. David and Rick were one of the first gay couples to be married in the state of California, and David worked tirelessly to advocate for equal marriage rights. His commitment to equality, service, and compassion left a lasting impact on many lives.
David would want to be remembered as a caring community member who loved meeting people, traveling the world, and giving back whenever possible.
He is survived by his husband of 41 years, Rick Travis, his brothers Don Bourassa and his wife Stephanie, and Gary Bourassa and his wife Nancy, as well as many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
David was preceded in death by his father, James Bourassa, and his mother, Genevieve Bourassa.
David’s kindness, advocacy, and love for life will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
