Eugene Carl Fieg Jr. was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, and passed away on January 9, 2026, in Northridge, California, following a short illness.

Gene spent most of his professional life as a reference librarian, first at the University of Chicago and later at Claremont College. He had a deep love of learning and scholarship. He enjoyed reading professional journals and devoted much of his personal time to translating the Bible from its original texts. He could read Hebrew, Greek, and Arabic.

Gene was studious and serious about most things, and though he was often quiet, he enjoyed a good joke. He liked eating out at Applebee’s and appreciated the company of the waitstaff. He graduated from Maryville College with an undergraduate degree in English and earned a master’s degree in Theology from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

Gene is most proud of his participation in various plays In the local community theaters in the Claremont area. He loved acting and enjoyed his role in The Christmas Carol. When he wasn't acting he was busy constructing the sets for various plays as well as controlling the lighting for certain performances.

Gene was a good friend and a good brother. He will be missed.

Gene is survived by his sister Karen Fieg Frantz, his brother David Gerald Fieg, his nieces Alison Harte of Vermont and Meredith McGill of England, and his stepson Aric Chen.

He was preceded in death by his father Eugene Carl Fieg Sr. and his mother Geraldine Dalton Fieg.

Memorial service information will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Maryville College Scholar Fund, 502 Lamar Alexander Parkway, Maryville, Tennessee 37804.

Gene will be remembered with quiet respect and appreciation by those who knew him.
