Gary Eastin
Obituary

Gary L. Eastin passed away on September 1, 2026, at the age of 85 in Joshua Tree, CA.

Known as “Tweety” in high school (Palm Springs), Gary was the smallest and fastest player on the varsity football team, and he carried that same restless energy throughout his life. He was always active—a runner in his younger years and later a passionate hiker who trekked in Peru, hiked in and out of the Grand Canyon, and especially loved hiking Ryan Mountain in Joshua Tree National Park.

Gary built a successful career at Union Bank, rising to Vice President of the Commercial Real Estate Division before striking out on his own as a real estate developer. Later in life, he followed a different passion altogether, reinventing himself as a novelist.

Gary was rarely at a loss for words. He always had a story to tell, an opinion to share, or a conversation to strike up with whoever happened to be nearby.

Whether he was hiking a mountain, working on a real estate project, writing a novel, or simply talking with someone he had just met, Gary approached life with energy, curiosity, and plenty to say.

He is survived by his partner, Susan Scanlan; his daughters, Dawn Eastin and Brandi Eastin; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A private service will be held at a later date.
