It has been truly an honor to know this man and if you have had the privilege of friendship or being kin, then you know that there are three words to describe Hugh – benevolent, magnanimous and loyal.
21-questions Get to Know Hugh:
1. Where were you born? Suffern, New York
2. Where is your family originally from? I come from a long line of Mattinglys hailing from Louisville, Kentucky
3. Who were your parents? My mother was Dorothy Ellis Mattingly and my father was Hugh Davis Mattingly Sr
4. Did you have any siblings? Yes, I had an older sister
5. Were you close to your parents? Yes, I was. I took care of them when my father got very sick and passed from Cancer. I also took care of my mother who passed from Cancer almost a year later.
6. What did you do for a living? I was a Professional Chef for Margaritaville in Las Vegas and Patina Group in Los Angeles. I have been a cook for a long time since I was young. I cooked for 26 years until I started going blind.
7. What kind of music do you like? I love all genres of music, but my favorites are Country Western, Tejano, Pop, Rock and Gospel. I collect CDs.
8. Who is your favorite basketball team? LA Lakers and my favorite player of all time is Kobe Bryant.
9. What is your favorite cuisine? I enjoy all kinds of food, especially the kind that Shelley makes for me or the different restaurants we eat at.
10. Who are your celebrity crushes? Jenny Rivera, Sharon Stone, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Taylor Swift.
11. Do you have a favorite football team? I love the Dallas Cowboys and their cheerleaders. I actually have a signed calendar from the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders.
12. What did you do for the first time? I flew on an airplane to Utah
13. What is one excursion that is memorable for you? We rode on a pedicab along the beach and covered areas like Santa Monica, Venice and Pacific Palisades. The Pacific Ocean was so beautiful and smelled great. The sun was beaming.
14. What gets you into trouble? I have a secret stash of Hostess Cakes Ding Dongs and I treat myself even though I shouldn’t because I am a diabetic.
15. What kind of soda do you like? Diet Pepsi Free
16. What are some favorite things do you like to do? Have action movies playing on the TV, getting the latest gadgets like stereo surround sound, shopping at Target, reading the bible and learning of the Lord’s Gospel, reading about celebrities in the tabloids, making scented soap, sharing things with my friends and collecting dreamcatchers.
17. What are some great memories do you have of your parents? My father was in the military and loved this country, the US of A. He taught me so many things. My mother was an angel and had a wonderful heart. They had a beautiful marriage.
18. What are you grateful for? I am grateful to have met and loved the beautiful love of my life. I am grateful for my dearest friends. I am grateful for my parents. I am grateful for all the doctors, nurses and everyone who has treated me and took care of me. I am grateful to God for giving me this life.
19. What was one thing you would like to have done? Travel cross country and eat at every BBQ spot.
20. What would you have people remember you for? I would like anyone I have met or known, I try to be a good person, help others, love my neighbors. I have never held a grudge. I try to remember that I am blessed and very lucky.
21. What is one charity or organization that you would leave a donation to? I would leave a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital because there should be a cure for children’s cancers.
With a heavy-laden heart, we are saddened with our loss of Hugh. He truly embodied a saintly person. We will miss him for his laugh. He was a great listener, confidante and supported whatever endeavor made his loved ones happy. He was a son, brother, partner, uncle, friend and proud American. God be with you till we meet again.
