A Life of Love, Strength, and Distinct Style
Joe Lewis Word, 87, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026, at his home in Cerritos, California.
Born on March 13 in San Antonio, Texas, Joe was the beloved son of Otto and Lillian Word. He was raised in San Antonio, where he developed the strong values, resilience, and character that would guide him throughout his life.
Joe attended Wheatley High School and later Compton Community College. He was a proud Teamster and a man who embodied the roles of provider, protector, and educator for his family. Deeply conscious in his beliefs and grounded in faith, Joe lived a life rooted in love, compassion, and Biblical principles, setting an enduring example for generations to follow.
In his early years, Joe had a passion for building muscle cars, a love that evolved into collecting and appreciating them later in life. He was known for his sharp sense of style always impeccably dressed, often seen in his signature Kangol caps and Stacey Adams shoes carrying himself with a distinct and effortless “cool.”
Joe had a gift for conversation. He loved discussing sports, current events, and life itself, and was just as known for being a thoughtful and attentive listener. His wisdom and guidance were constants in the lives of those who knew him. Among family, his affectionate way of calling loved ones “Jack” became a cherished tradition, one that will continue to echo in memory and love.
Above all, Joe was a deeply loving and compassionate man. He poured into his family with unwavering devotion, always offering sound advice, steady support, and genuine care.
Family
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria Word; his children, Natalie & Lloyd Lee, and Shawntoia Word; his grandchildren, Quinn and Adrian Campbell, Lloyd Lee Jr., and Lord Hannabul Lee; his great-grandchildren, Zeri Campbell and Zaria Campbell; and his sisters, Ruth Walker and Gladys LaBeaux.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Lillian Word, and his sister, Othella Pitts.
In accordance with Joe’s wishes, no formal funeral services will be held. His family will honor his life privately, cherishing the memories, love, and wisdom he shared with all who knew him.
