Raymond Michael Coyne, 68, of San Diego, California, passed away on March 7 2026, at Scripps Mercy Hospital after a battle with cancer. He was born on November 8, 1957, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, to the late Raymond V. Coyne and Winifred McLean Coyne.
Ray is survived by his sisters Cathy (Chuck) and Pat (Bob), his brother Tom (Anne), his seven nieces and nephews—Rose, Bobby, Lauren, Charlie, Ali, Patrick, and Andrea—and his grandnieces Zoey and Willow and grandnephew Finn.
Ray spent his first eight years in New Jersey before the family moved to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. As a teenager, he relocated again with his family to the Chicago suburbs, where he graduated from Hinsdale South High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and his J.D. degree from DePaul University.
Ray built an exceptional career in corporate law working for several prominent communication companies and developing a strong reputation for expertise in technology IP agreements. Most recently, he served as Senior Counsel and IP Attorney at Avantor. Ray was widely respected as an outstanding lawyer with deep experience in his specialized field.
Beyond his legal career, Ray had a lifelong love of language and writing. He published several short stories and possessed natural artistic talent.
After many years practicing law in Chicago, Ray moved to San Diego and quickly became a devoted Californian. He took great joy in sharing his new home with visiting family and friends—whether strolling through Balboa Park, exploring the San Diego Zoo, visiting the La Jolla beaches and watching the seals, or taking boat rides in the harbor. Ray loved Southern California, and it was there that he developed a passion for the outdoors. He climbed many of the mountains in the region and cherished time spent hiking and being in nature.
Ray maintained deep and meaningful friendships from high school, college, and the legal profession throughout his adult life. He was kind, loyal, and quietly generous. In photographs throughout his life, his warm smile was brightest when he was with his siblings, nieces, nephews, and the people he loved.
Ray’s family thanks the kind, compassionate and thoughtful physicians and nurses who cared for Ray at Scripps Mercy Hospital.
A private memorial service is planned.
In Ray’s honor, get out, enjoy a hike. Take in some natural beauty and share it with Ray in your own way.
