He was a son, a brother, and a father. His life had many difficult seasons, but those struggles were not the entirety of who he was.

Some of my memories of my brother are simple ones. I remember him watching Soul Train, turning around and asking me, “Do you know how to dance like that?” He took pride in the way he looked. He loved ironing his clothes and especially his pants, and he would wear a hairnet to keep his hair slicked back just right.

He also had a deep love and loyalty for the neighborhood he came from. It was a place he identified with strongly and never really wanted to leave.

Our relationship was not always consistent, but we stayed connected through different seasons. While he was incarcerated, he wrote to me, sent me cards and I sent him packages. When he was released, he came to visit and met his nieces and nephews. Those moments are part of the relationship we shared as brother and sister.

His story was complicated, but he was still my brother, and his life mattered.

He leaves behind his son, his siblings, and other family members who will each remember him in their own way.

May he finally rest in peace.
