Sandra Beryl Marcelle Curzon was born July 6th, 1928 to Frederick and Winifred Curzon at 25 Fernhead Rd., London. She was the last living sibling of 6. Sandra is survived by her 2 sons, Robert and Stephen Hawley, 2 step children, John Jr. and Karen, as well as 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Sandra had many fond memories of childhood, which included being evacuated to Wales during the WWII bombings of London. She was completely devoted to her family and fiercely loyal and protective of those she loved, most notably her siblings. She married Robert B. Hawley Jr., an American Air Force soldier stationed at the R.A.F. base in Upper Heyford in Oxfordshire. Sons Robert and Stephen were born a year apart and in 1954 the family relocated to LeRoy, Ohio in the USA, a rural ‘company town’ with a population around 750 which supported and was built around the home offices of The Ohio Farmers Insurance Co.
Sandra became quite the attraction and many funny stories resulted from misunderstandings and attempts to adapt to her new environment, her friends and neighbors united in good intentions yet separated by a common language. Sandra quickly learned she had a superpower: Americans are completely mesmerized, beguiled, and charmed by a British accent, especially when combined with a hint of bewilderment and naivety. This was employed to great effect over the next 7 decades. A third son, Kevin, was born in 1956, but was soon diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, a terrible degenerative disease. Sandra was relentless in her pursuit of treatment; Kevin died in December 1972.
In 1970, the marriage ended. Sandra relocated to Pensacola, Florida. It was there while working as the hostess in the Naval Officers Club she met her second husband, Capt. John Leo Kauth, whom she wedded in San Diego. They traveled extensively throughout Asia and Europe. After Capt. Kauth retired, they continued their travels, accompanied by grandchildren Ryan, Patrick, and Brendon Hawley. Capt. Kauth died in March 2007.
Sandra remained in San Diego until February 2024, then relocated to Los Angeles and lived with son Stephen. In the years following her husband’s passing, she made several trips to her beloved homeland, spending time on holidays with sister Rita, visited her brothers Bob and Terry in Hudson’s Hope, B.C. Canada, and took month-long solo trips to vacation in Mexico. Ever a very proud and headstrong Brit with a dogged sense of independence, she accepted the deaths of her cherished siblings only because she would never have acquiesced to leaving them without her guidance and care. She died peacefully on March 16th, 2026.
Her remains will be interred next to her husband, Capt. John Kauth in the Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery.
