Stella was impossible to overlook. Her iconic, curly red hair alone could announce her arrival in any room before she'd said a word. She was a live wire, capable of turning from laughter to argument to impromptu concert in an instant. She lived as the star of her own one-woman show, raising herself onto a pedestal even when there was nobody around to do it for her. And beneath this formidable personality was a fierce devotion to the people close to her, every bit as uncompromising as she was.
For more than 35 years, this intensity shaped the way Ms. Stella—as her students called her—taught piano, bringing a depth to her lessons that went well beyond playing the right notes. Through decades of laughter and tears, she put every ounce of her soul into hundreds of students. Regardless of whether they continued their musical education, she instilled in them a sense of confidence, perseverance, and courage. For her, music was about learning how to listen and express that which could not be said in words. Though she demanded discipline and commitment, she had an uncanny ability to recognize potential in people who did not yet see it in themselves.
Believing that music belonged to everyone, Stella wanted others to experience what music had given her: a richer, fuller way of understanding the world. She carried this philosophy beyond the classroom, performing at community centers and retirement homes, and eventually establishing a nonprofit that brought music instruction to children with special needs.
Cancer took her life far too soon and unexpectedly, but not before she had relentlessly given so much of herself to the people around her. She was an exceptional teacher, friend, and mother, and ultimately, an unforgettable presence to behold. She left behind something more lasting than a legacy: the memory of having known her and of having been changed by her.
