Carl Bird "Mac" McLaughlin Jr.

July 14, 1942 - April 24, 2025

Carl Bird McLaughlin Jr., known to all as "Mac," passed away peacefully at home in Northridge, California, on Thursday, April 24, 2025, with his sons by his side. He was 82.

Mac was a man of many dimensions—an actor, a carpenter, a poet, and a true original. He had the soul of an artist and the grit of a builder, a rare mix of creativity and craftsmanship. Incredibly handsome and effortlessly charismatic, Mac had a presence that drew people in and left a lasting impression. His sense of humor was sharp and ever-present, always finding ways to get a rise out of people, often with a twinkle in his eye. He lived boldly and authentically, never afraid to speak his mind or stand out.

Mac was raised in Louisville, Kentucky, but moved at a young age to Colorado, where he fell in love with the American West and the majesty of the Colorado Rockies. That love for the open road and rugged landscapes stayed with him for life, reflected in his passion for motorcycles—especially Harley-Davidsons.

In pursuit of his dreams, Mac moved to California to become an actor. He found success, becoming a regular on several television shows, most notably The Rat Patrol. His natural magnetism and striking looks made him a standout on screen, while his dedication to his craft earned him lasting respect in the industry.

He also published a book of poetry, offering a glimpse into the introspective and sensitive man behind the confident exterior. Whether through building, performing, or writing, Mac expressed himself with unfiltered honesty and passion.  Mac was a Christian and carried a strong faith in God throughout his life. His faith was a steady presence through both triumphs and trials, grounding him in love, grace, and hope. It was a quiet strength that shaped how he saw the world and how he treated others.

Both of Mac’s sons, Brandon and Carl III, followed in their father’s footsteps into the film industry, each in their own way reflecting a part of his legacy. Brandon, who inherited Mac’s sharp mechanical mind and hands-on ingenuity, became a skilled fabricator and a successful special effects coordinator, bringing cinematic worlds to life from behind the scenes. Carl carried forward Mac’s artistic passion as an actor and filmmaker, continuing the creative spirit that shaped their family. That spirit lives on through both sons—and through his cherished granddaughter, Elaine.

He is also survived by his beloved sister, Claudia, with whom he shared a deep and enduring bond.

Carl “Mac” McLaughlin Jr. will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him. He lived with fire in his heart, faith in his soul, and leaves behind a legacy of art, laughter, beauty, and fierce independence.
