Sandi Marie Jenkins, a beacon of warmth, grace, and resilience, peacefully passed away on April 24, 2025, in Montclair, California, due to complications of dementia. She was 88 years old.
Born on February 3, 1937, in Oak Grove, Louisiana, Sandi’s life was a testament to love, strength, and a steadfast commitment to family and community. She made history as the first Black telephone operator for the City of Los Angeles, breaking barriers and opening doors for those who followed. Her professional journey was only one chapter in a life filled with passion and purpose.
A devoted wife to the late Edward Jenkins, Sandi was deeply committed to her family, whom she loved with all her heart. Her kind soul, gentle spirit, and welcoming nature made everyone feel like family. She was a proud civil rights advocate, contributing her time and voice to causes that mattered. She worked on Mayor Tom Bradley’s historic campaign and was active with the NAACP, helping countless people register to vote—always believing in a better, more inclusive society.
Sandi found joy in life’s simple pleasures: traveling with her family, cherishing moments with her grandchildren and great-granddaughter, and greeting each day with positivity and grace. Her legacy is one of love, service, and unwavering kindness.
She is survived by her beloved sister Gloria Todd and brother John Smith; her devoted son Bryan Jenkins and daughter-in-law Victoria Jenkins; her cherished granddaughters Dana Jeter (Patrick Jeter), Macy Jenkins, and Maya Jenkins; and her precious great-granddaughter Cali Cross.
Sandi now joins her husband Edward Jenkins, her parents Noah Smith and Lucille Waters-Smith, her daughters Linda Smith and Denise Smith, and her loved ones Christine Randall and Eddie Smith in eternal peace.
Sandi Marie Jenkins will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and as a courageous contributor to society who left the world better than she found it. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the family she loved, and the causes she championed.
