Yuk Why Tam, born on December 6, 1934, in Taishan, China, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2024, in San Gabriel, California, due to acute respiratory failure and pneumonia. For much of his life, he supported his family running a dry cleaning business in Panama and then working as a cook in Chinatown restaurants. In his spare time, Yuk Why Tam enjoyed reading newspapers, reflecting on politics and the world, and showing up at Phillipe’s restaurant to have coffee and sandwiches with friends. He had a deep appreciation for the simple joys in life.
One of his proudest moments was revisiting his hometown in Taishan five years ago, reconnecting with the village where he grew up. This journey was a cherished accomplishment that spoke to his deep roots and enduring spirit.
Above all, Yuk Why Tam was a family man who sought harmony and happiness for his loved ones. His simple yet profound wish was to see his children thrive and live fulfilling lives. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Chui Lan Tam. He is survived by his children: Lucia, Frederick, Sophia, and Lily; his son-in-law and daughter-in-law: Michael and Annie; his grandchildren: Anthony, Stephen, Raymond, Katherine, Eric, Stephanie, Melanie, Chelsea, Christine, and Lianne; and his great-grandchildren: Marcus, Maximillian, Kara, Mabel, and Noreen.
A memorial service to celebrate Yuk Why Tam’s life will be held on December 8, 2024. He will be remembered as a gentle, content soul who found full satisfaction in life’s simplicity and held an enduring love for his children. His wisdom and warmth will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
